Tips for getting the best results
Converting won't undo existing damage
PNG preserves whatever the JPG already contains — including compression artifacts baked in earlier. It prevents further loss, but it can't recover detail that's already gone.
Expect a much bigger file
A 500 KB photo can become 3–4 MB as PNG. That's normal and it's the price of lossless storage — keep JPG for anything you're emailing or putting on a web page.
Use PNG for screenshots with text
If your JPG is a screenshot, PNG will make the text noticeably crisper on any future edit, since it stops the blur from spreading.
Keep the original too
Store both versions when the image matters. The JPG stays convenient for sharing; the PNG becomes your editing master.
Common problems and how to fix them
The PNG is enormous compared with my JPG
That's expected behaviour, not a bug. PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG throws data away to be small. If size matters more than perfect quality, stay with JPG.
My image still doesn't have a transparent background
Converting to PNG only enables transparency support — it doesn't remove the background for you. You'll need an image editor, or a background-removal tool, to erase it after converting.
The photo looks the same, slightly soft
It should look identical to the JPG. Any softness you see was already present in the source file; PNG simply reproduces it faithfully.
