What is the platform fee calculator?

A platform fee calculator shows the gap between the number on your invoice and the number that reaches your bank. Marketplaces take a commission, card processors take a percentage plus a fixed amount per payment, and if you are paid in another currency your bank takes a cut of that too. Individually each one sounds small. Stacked together they routinely remove 13 to 20% of a freelance invoice, and because they are deducted rather than billed, most people never add them up. This tool does both directions: what you keep from a given invoice, and — more usefully — what you would have to invoice for the amount you actually wanted to be the amount that lands.

How our free platform fee calculator works

1

Enter the invoice

The amount you are charging the client before anyone takes anything.

2

Add the platform's cut

Marketplace commission, agency cut, or whatever percentage sits between you and the client.

3

Add processing and currency

Card processing is usually a percentage plus a fixed fee. Add conversion if you are paid in another currency.

4

Read both answers

What you receive, and what to invoice so that you receive what you meant to.

What can you use the platform fee calculator for?

Quoting on a marketplace

A 10% commission on a $1,000 project is $100 you never see. Price it in rather than discovering it at payout.

Choosing how to get paid

Compare a bank transfer against a card payment on the same invoice. On large amounts the difference is often worth the inconvenience.

Deciding a minimum project size

Fixed fees make small jobs disproportionately expensive to process. This shows where that line sits.

Who uses our free platform fee calculator?

Marketplace freelancers

Upwork, Fiverr and similar platforms take a commission before you see anything.

Anyone invoicing abroad

Conversion and cross-border fees quietly eat several percent of every international invoice.

Subcontractors

Working through an agency means a cut you should be pricing for, not absorbing.

Anyone using Stripe or PayPal

2.9% plus a fixed fee is small on a large invoice and painful on twenty small ones.

Why use the platform fee calculator?

Shows the stacked total

Fees that look trivial alone are rarely trivial together.

Works backwards too

Tells you what to charge so the amount you wanted is the amount you get.

Handles the fixed fee

Percentage-only calculators understate the cost of lots of small payments.

Tips for getting the best results

Quote the gross, not the net

Use the 'to actually receive' figure as your quote. Absorbing fees silently is a discount you did not agree to.

Check the fixed fee on small invoices

Thirty cents on a $20 invoice is 1.5% on top of the percentage.

Currency conversion is rarely 0%

Most banks take 2–3% on conversion, often hidden in the exchange rate rather than shown as a fee.

Fees are a business cost

They belong in your rate calculation as an annual cost, not as a surprise per invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage do the main platforms take?

It changes, so check your own account rather than trusting any published figure, including this one. Marketplace commissions have historically ranged from about 5% to 20%, and card processing sits near 2.9% plus a fixed amount per transaction.

Why is the 'to receive X, invoice Y' number higher than just adding the percentage?

Because the fee is charged on the larger amount. Adding 10% to $1,000 gives $1,100, but 10% of $1,100 is $110, leaving you $990. The correct figure divides rather than adds.

Should I pass fees on to the client?

Build them into the price rather than adding them as a line item. Most clients react badly to a processing surcharge and never notice a rate that quietly covers it.

Does this include tax?

No. This is only about fees deducted between the invoice and your account. Tax is a separate calculation on what you keep.
